Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is a treatment in which you breathe 100 percent pure oxygen while lying inside a pressurized chamber made of clear acrylic. The air pressure inside the chamber is about two and a half times greater than the normal pressure in the atmosphere. This high-pressure dose of oxygen helps your blood carry more oxygen to your organs and tissues to promote wound healing. It also activates your white blood cells to fight infection.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a therapeutic option for treatment. You’ll lay inside a clear acrylic pressurized chamber during your session and breathe 100% pure oxygen. This type of therapy is beneficial for specific conditions because the more highly pressurized dose of oxygen (nearly 2.5 times greater than the Earth’s atmosphere) will accelerate white blood cell production and carry enhanced oxygen levels to your organs and tissue.

Wounds are slow to heal when there is a lack of oxygen in the tissue around the wound. Breathing 100% oxygen under pressure dissolves more oxygen in your body’s blood. The blood with the higher oxygen level is then delivered to those areas with trouble healing. Wound healing improves because of the increase in the oxygen level:

  • Stimulates small blood vessel growth
  • Promotes new skin growth
  • Helps fight infection

An average treatment lasts about two hours. The number of treatments you will need can vary. Your treatment schedule will depend on your condition and your response to HBOT.

  • A person with diabetes and a wound that is slow to heal or is not healing
  • Someone with tissue damage caused by radiation therapy
  • Someone with a skin graft that does not have a strong blood supply
  • Patients with certain infections of the bone and/or skin
  • Anyone with a wound that has not improved in four weeks
